 RPG Poll
Jaibyrd, you stated:
Hi - This is Jai'byrd here... I hope you don't mind too much Sora, but I edited your list as most of your choices were not RPGs. Sorry to say Resident Evil, Dino Crisis and the MK6 side game are not RPGs. I added in ones that most everyone here has played and I'm sorry I didn't get in Wild Arms, Saga Frontier, and whatever else I'm not thinking of at the moment... Enjoy!
Well, that's quite generous of you, but most pf the stuff you put up there I don't know anything about. May you explain them?

I vote Kingdom Hearts. There's nothing like a good world combination!

Good choice, that would be my choice too if Disney wasn't so smart.

Thanks.
I've heard Kingdom Hearts was good. But I haven't been able to get my hands on it, just yet. I was told something about the storyline but honestly, I didn't get too much of it. Has it a difficult storyline?

I had to give the vote to Final Fantasy. With only one exception (FF IX) I like every version of the game I have seen. Sure I have some problems with each game, but on the whole they appeal to me. I like the characters (for the most part) and the stories (when I can follow them). I generally LOVE the musical scores (no surprise there) and the animation as well. I take each game as it comes and treat each as the stand alone it really is... even X and X2 are unique (X is more of a classic RPG and X2 tries to ride the wave of "sexy" games that came out around that timeframe).
I really enjoyed playing Chrono Cross, especially the second time through. And I adore Xenogears!!! I got the Lunar collection awhile back but haven't played it yet. And there are several RPG'esque games for the Dreamcast (that are not listed and have no reason to be really) that are excellent in their own way. Skies of Arcadia anyone?! Lodoss Wars (which is more RPG'esque than a true RPG... but I'd say it qualifies) too. And then there is that game that slips under so many radars, Legend of Legaia. Which is a game I think is just bitchin! But still, I hand my vote to the series that MADE me play for more than 12 hours straight on too many occasions to mention.

Okay Sora, it's education time.
An RPG. It means Role-Playing Game. Generally, on a console (like PlayStation 2 or GameCube or whatever) it's a game where there's a large amount of playable characters that get together into a team and fight in combat systems that allow you to control them all at the same time. Generally, each character has stats that increase as you beat more enemies, making them better fighters and giving them more abilities. Also, you can usually buy and find better equipment as the game goes on for the characters to use. These games are generally quite a bit longer than those of all other genres, requiring you to save quite often in order to come back and continue. As such, RPGs tend to have long and at least somewhat complex storylines to follow.
Now, take all of that into consideration. This means that Resident Evil, Dino Crisis, Mortal Kombat, and all other games that don't follow the majority of the above formula are NOT RPGS. Get it?
I hope I've enlightened you.

Man, sometimes I HATE my compulsion to play devil's advocate. But Darlos understands... I hope. *sheepish smile*
I can see the desire to lump Dino Crisis, RE, etc into the RPG category. Weapons are upgraded to better weapons throughout the game. There are puzzles to work through and such games usually have a "story" behind them that you play through. These games have elements of the traditional RPG to them. Some more so than others... Paracite Eve for example.
But Darlos is totally justified. Dino Crisis, Resident Evil, Paracite Eve, Fear Effect... these are are "survival/horror" games. Well, maybe not Fear Effect. I'm not sure where I'm supposed to place that game as far as categories. :? And where does the Tomb Raider franchise sit anyway? Action/Adventure game? Ah well... no matter.
